Driving Edge ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal data when you use the Driving Edge mobile application and related services (the "App").
This policy applies to students and instructors using Driving Edge within the United Kingdom.
1. Who We Are
Driving Edge is a technology platform that helps driving instructors and students manage lessons, scheduling, payments, expenses, messaging, and learning progress.
For the purposes of UK data protection law, Driving Edge is the data controller.

2. What Data We Collect
2.1 Account & Identity Data
We collect information required to create and manage user accounts, including:
- Name
- Email address
- Password (stored in encrypted form)
- User role (student or instructor)
- Profile photo
2.2 Lesson, Scheduling & Event Data
To manage lessons and availability, we collect:
- Lesson dates and times
- Open slots and bookings
- Lesson duration and cost
- Pickup locations (as entered by the users)
- Lesson status
2.3 Messaging & Communications
When users communicate through Driving Edge, we store:
- Message content
- Sender and recipient identifiers
- Message timestamps
- Delivery and read status
Messages are stored to enable communication history and service functionality.
2.4 Progress Tracking & Skill Data
To support learning progress, we store:
- Skill ratings entered by instructors
- Lesson feedback and progress indicators
- Category-based driving skill assessments
This data is informational only and does not represent certification or test readiness.
2.5 Payments, Credits & Financial Records
We collect limited financial information for administrative and tracking purposes, including:
- Payment method type
- Lesson prices and totals
- Credit movements (additions and deductions)
- Instructor expense records (instructor accounts only)
Driving Edge does not store full card details or bank account information.
2.6 Notifications & System Data
We collect:
- In-app notifications
- Read/Unread Status
- Session and authentication records
- Log and audit data for security and reliability
2.7 Automatically Collected Technical Data
We may collect:
- Device type and operating system
- App usage activity
- IP address and timestamps
This data helps us maintain security and improve performance.
3. How We Use Your Data
We use your personal data to:
- Create and manage user accounts
- Facilitate lesson scheduling and communication
- Track lesson progress and credits
- Process payments and display transaction history

We do not sell your personal data.
4. Legal Bases for Processing (UK GDPR)
We process your data under the following lawful bases:
- Contract – to provide the App and its features

- Consent – where explicitly requested (e.g. optional communications)
5. Messaging & Read Receipts
- Messages sent within Driving Edge are stored to enable delivery and conversation history
- Messaging data is used solely to support App functionality and safety
6. Credits & Progress Data
- Credit balances represent prepaid lesson entitlements, not money
- Progress tracking and skill ratings are stored for educational and administrative purposes
- Instructors are responsible for the accuracy of skill ratings they submit
7. Sharing your Data
We may share your personal data with:
- Payment providers (e.g. Stripe) for payment processing
- Cloud hosting and infrastructure providers
- Analytics and error monitoring services
- Legal, or regulatory authorities where required by law
We do not share data with advertisers. All third parties are required to handle data securely and lawfully.
8. Data Retention
We retain personal data only as long as necessary:
- Active Accounts: Data is retained while your account remains active.
- Deleted Accounts (Two-Stage Anonymization): When you request account deletion:
- Stage 1 (Immediate): Your email, password, surname, profile photo, and learning progress (skill ratings) are immediately and permanently deleted or anonymized. You will no longer be able to log in.
- Stage 2 (12 Months): Your first name and phone number are retained for 12 months following your deletion request. This is kept to maintain the integrity of the instructor’s historical lesson records and contact lists.
- Stage 3 (Final): After 12 months of inactivity, your first name and phone number are automatically anonymized, and the record becomes entirely non-identifiable.
- Financial Records: Basic transaction logs are retained as required by UK financial and tax law.
9. Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including:
- Secure authentication
- Access controls
- Regular system monitoring
No system is completely secure, but we work hard to protect your information.
10. Your Rights (UK GDPR)
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data: You can request account deletion via the App settings. Please note that "deletion" is fulfilled by anonymizing your personal records so they can no longer be linked to you. As noted in Section 8, this process occurs in stages to balance your right to be forgotten with the instructor's need for historical record-keeping.
- Restrict or object to processing
- Request data portability
- Withdraw consent where applicable

11. International Transfers
Your data is primarily processed within the UK or countries with adequate data protection safeguards. Where data is transferred internationally, appropriate safeguards are in place.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
